AMR – MODBUS & MODBUS (RS-485) Systems

Modbus RS-485 is a serial transmission standard and open protocol used in utility applications such as electricity metering and is very common in process automation. It’s a two-wire, multi-point connection that uses different voltages across the wires to communicate serial data. RS-485 is a duplex communication system that allows multiple devices on the same bus to communicate in both directions, but it’s most often used in half-duplex mode with only a single communication line. The Modbus protocol has since evolved and now includes variants such as Modbus RTU, Modbus ASCII, and Modbus TCP/IP.

Modbus electricity metering systems, also known as Modbus power meters, can provide real-time data and remote-control capabilities. They can also support multiple communication protocols and offer accurate measurements for efficient energy management and reliable billing.

Modbus electricity meters can provide data such as:

  • Energy (total and partial)
  • Active power
  • Voltage
  • Current
  • Frequency
  • Power

The Energy meter Modbus protocol is also essential for the integration of energy data into higher-level systems such as SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and building management systems. By communicating through the Modbus protocol, energy meters can seamlessly integrate with these systems, providing real-time energy data for monitoring and control.
